Interesting D&D 3.5 Campaign

Hey Readers!

I wanted to make a quick post about something other than just general gaming theory and my insistence on player choice and consequence.  Dungeon and Dragons!  We're currently going through a sweet campaign.  So sweet, in fact, that i wanted to tell all you about it.  It's the most ... stress isn't the exact right word, but i'll use it because it's not far from the truth.  It's the most stressful game i've played.  It's that sort of stress where your character is nervous about the unknown, scary world, but you're even more concerned because of what YOU know.

The premise of this world was inspired by the movie Reign of Fire.  But dropped on The Forgotten Realms.  Effectively, the mortal races are subjugated by the entirety of Dragonkind.  The gods are dead or hiding.  Their places of power and portfolios of influence have been usurped by the Dragons.  Magic, both divine and arcane, is fizzled out, or worse.  All resources are owned and controlled by the Dragons and their kin, especially the lives of the mortals.

The only power available to PCs is Psionics (think Psychic powers), but even that is reduced, heavily.  So, how do you build a character that doesn't need armor or weapons, doesn't use Magic, and is tough enough to stand against Dragons?  Ninjas.  Lots of Ninjas.

We're a party of 6, which certainly helps our chances.  One guy throws rocks (think 200lb boulders), one is a Martial Artist (Monk), one is a Ninja (Monk/Rogue), one's ... a weird crossbow wielding fruitcake sniper, one archer that shoots mind bullets (Soul Bow), and a Crazy psychic(me, Wilder).  And i'm not the potentially broken Wilder Blaster (boom!), oh no.  I'm a Constructor.  I'm useful, but not particularly deadly.  In combat... I die.

That is, until i have the time to create animated ectoplasmic robots.  Astral Construct is actually quite broken in this campaign, so the DM and i are balancing it by limiting my actions while i have one running around.  Also unusually powerful is the Soulknife.  Normally the idea of having a character build around creating its own equipment isn't all that great.  In a world where metal is hard to come by, the Soulknife is actually quite strong.

The class selection was a neat challenge for the game, but the biggest challenges are Communication and Healing.  Communication is against us.  Our enemies have the full gamut of d20 3.5 magic at their disposal.  If we defeat a single patrol, it will be discovered, and we absolutely cannot survive a properly calculated reprisal attack.  If we prove to be a big enough thorn in the side of the Dracocracy, we cannot stand against even one significantly aged opponent.  Every combat must end quickly and brutally.

Healing is our other challenge.  The players at the table literally measure damage sustained in days of recovery.  "Crap, i just got hit for 2 days... this isn't good."  My character, incidentally, can only take 4 or 5 days worth of damage before falling unconscious.  And there is the fact that we cannot rest in one spot, we must always remain on the move.

This campaign rocks.  So much so, in fact, that i feel the need to tell you about it.  So there.  I'll update as we move forward, too.
